Ecological Grief & Climate Anxiety In PsychoTherapy

This course will engage participants in developing an understanding of the phenomenon of ecological grief and climate anxiety within the framework of social work practice through a humanistic, experiential, and transpersonal perspective. This course will provide participants with a background on the mental health impacts of climate change, a working definition of eco-grief and climate-anxiety, as well as theoretical and practical components of psychotherapeutic interventions as responses in the context of climate change and mental health. Participants will analyze the interconnectedness of the natural world, climate degradation, and mental wellbeing in order to enhance and strengthen applications of social work practice. Educational activities in this course will include didactic approaches such as presentations and text regarding theory in addition to experiential activities in the above listed areas and a facilitated group processing and discussion of these experiential practices.

Course Objectives

Articulate a definition of ecological grief and climate anxiety as they pertain to clinical social work practice

Assess practical therapeutic interventions that promote coping skills and wellbeing in relationship to climate change and environmental degradation

Understand the evidence connecting mental health and environment in respect to climate change
