Understanding the Intricacies Of IEPs and 504 Plans: Legal Requirements, Testing, and Accommodations
Students who struggle in the educational system often are overlooked and face significant vulnerabilities in life and in school. It is important for social work practitioners to understand the mechanics of policies, practices, and laws that govern the implementation of Special Education support and 504 plans. The differences between students who should qualify for an IEP versus those who would be eligible for a 504 plan often are unknown among practitioners, including social workers, counselors, and other professionals. To best advocate for relevant and appropriate services, professionals should be equipped with the most up-to-date knowledge and tools to advocate for students in the school setting.
This course will focus on supporting students with a variety of disabilities (e.g., learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and disabilities that impact physical and mental health) in educational settings. Emphasis will be placed on developing knowledge and an understanding of the differences between 504 plans and IEPs offered under the auspices of Special Education. A special focus will be placed on understanding special education and areas of eligibility.
