Class Description

This interactive course invites social workers and mental health professionals to explore the lived experiences of individuals struggling with addiction through the dynamic mediums of music and film. Together, we will listen to powerful songs and watch impactful movie clips that vividly portray the emotional, psychological, and social dimensions of addiction and recovery. Participants will engage in group discussions and guided reflections, delving into themes such as guilt, shame, hopelessness, the progression of addiction, and the challenges of recovery. This immersive experience will deepen your understanding of the addictive journey and equip you with insights that can be applied to your clinical practice. Whether you’re seeking to build greater empathy, enhance your therapeutic approach, or connect more deeply with clients, this course offers an engaging and thought-provoking way to explore addiction and recovery through art and storytelling. Course Objectives Actively listen to songs and analyze movie clips that depict the experiences of addiction and recovery Participate in interactive group discussions to explore the key themes presented in music and film Develop a deeper understanding of the emotional and psychological challenges of addiction Apply insights gained through media to enhance empathy and inform clinical interventions About the Instructor Michael Chiappone, LCSW, has been a Social Worker for 17 years. His work has primarily focused on assisting people who are homeless, mentally ill, or living with Substance Use Disorder. He also sees clients who seek help for a variety of reasons. For most of his career, he worked at Hope House Ministries, a highly respected not-for-profit agency. He held two positions at Hope House, Director of Project Hope II, a program that worked specifically with the chronic homeless population. He also assisted in developing and implementing Hope Academy, a non-traditional, long-term treatment facility for substance abuse. Currently, he works full-time as a Coordinator of a SUD treatment facility. One of Michael's passions is learning and teaching. Michael has had the opportunity to teach college-level courses as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook. He taught a foundation course entitled Human Behavior and the Social Environment. He also had the opportunity to develop courses including Spirituality and Addiction as well as Self-Care for Social Workers.
