Course Description

Attachment in Couples Therapy Attachment dynamics are central to how couples experience connection, manage conflict, and achieve repair, yet these patterns can be difficult to identify and shift in real time. This course provides clinicians with a practical, attachment-informed framework for understanding and treating relational distress, grounded in Attachment Theory and informed by approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method. Designed for therapists seeking actionable tools, this training emphasizes translating theory into practice. YOU WILL LEARN: Recognize attachment strategies as they emerge in session Difference between surface-level conflict and underlying attachment needs Targeted interventions to… De-escalate conflict Foster emotional engagement between partners How attachment dynamics intensify during periods of heightened stress Attachment Dynamics – The learned, habitual patterns of behavior, emotion, and communication formed early in life that shape how adults experience intimacy, trust, and conflict in relationships. Gottman Method – An approach to couples therapy designed to “increase closeness and friendship behaviors, addressing conflict productively, and building a life of shared meaning together.” (Gottman Institute, 2026) Course Objectives Identify and differentiate primary adult attachment strategies Recognize associated behavioral patterns within couple interactions Conceptualize and map common negative interaction cycles Apply attachment-informed interventions to de-escalate conflict and facilitate emotional engagement between partners in session About the Instructor Jessica Erickson, LCSW, specializes in women’s mental health and relationship issues. She has extensive training and experience as a psychotherapist including leadership roles and supervisory positions at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Jessica additionally has experience as a doula, mindfulness-based childbirth and parenting teacher, and perinatal yoga teacher, all of which informs her clinical work. She received her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Chicago Crown School of Social Work.
