Course Description

Dynamics of Abuse and Support Strategies Level: Intermediate Discover higher-level knowledge & skills to recognize, respond to, and support individuals experiencing Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). IPV is a significant public health issue affecting all ages, genders, races, & socioeconomic backgrounds. Nearly 1 in 2 women and 2 in 5 men experience physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, and 1 in 5 women and 1 in 13 men report experiencing sexual violence by an intimate partner. Despite its prevalence, abuse may be difficult to recognize because it involves subtle patterns of coercion, manipulation, & control–not only physical violence. This course meets the need for professionals to recognize less overt signs of abuse, understand factors that make leaving abuse difficult, respond using trauma-informed, supportive approaches, and connect victims with appropriate resources. You’ll Learn: --The less-obvious distinctions of healthy relationship conflict vs. patterns of coercive control & abuse --Deeper insights into a range of abusive behaviors (physical, emotional, sexual, financial, & technology-facilitated) --Sensitive & practical ways to increase safety, reduce harm, & support individuals experiencing abuse Course Objectives --Recognize both overt & covert signs of Intimate Partner Violence --Explain how power, control & other barriers can make it challenging for victims to leave abusive relationships --Respond to signs of abuse using supportive, trauma-informed words & actions Discover richer sets of professional & community resources to enhance safety & support About the Instructor Courtney Hyland is the Associate Director of Prevention Education at The Retreat, where she leads development and delivery of professional education and prevention initiatives for social workers, clinicians, educators, healthcare providers, & other community professionals. She holds graduate degrees in Curriculum and Instruction and in Instructional Technology and Design, with a specialization in distance learning.
