Course Description

This is an introduction to LGBTQ competency focused on providing a deeper understanding of gender identity going beyond transgender individuals to also explore the gender binary and its societal implications. YOU WILL LEARN: --Helpful language to use as well as the differences and correlations between gender identity and sexual orientation --An overview of LGBTQ history & social movements tied to the current struggles faced by the LGBTQ community --How to apply these teachings to your daily practice and physical space to provide an affirming environment Course Objectives: 1. Explain differences between gender identity and sexual orientation 2. Identify key steps in an individual's gender transition 3. Understand LGBTQ history and how it continues to impact the community 4. Examine the needs and risks of the LGBTQ population 5. Reflect critically on key ways to provide an affirming practice and environment About the Instructor: Denisse is a therapist in the only LGBTQ-specific group home program in New York City, where she has worked for several years. As this role lands on many systemic intersections, she has developed a wide range of knowledge about the child welfare system in NYC, transgender-related healthcare processes, along with housing and education advocacy. While doing this work, Denisse has continued her education and enhanced her experience by participating in and presenting at TGNC-specific programs and professional conferences.

  • Records of grievances and resolutions are maintained and utilized to inform future course improvements.
