Perinatal Mental Health: Assess & Treat

Course Description

During pregnancy and postpartum people experience challenges in hormone shifts, sleep deprivation, and stress among other factors that can severely impact mental health. This course details diagnoses specific to the perinatal population, including postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, postpartum psychosis, and postpartum OCD. Through an attachment-based lens, this course will provide participants with an overview of clinical treatment options and considerations. YOU WILL LEARN: --Specific diagnostic criteria and assessment tools --How past trauma impacts the perinatal and postpartum periods --Clinical considerations when working with the perinatal population, including impact of trauma history, birth trauma, barriers to social support and other postpartum stressors Course Objectives: 1. Identify symptoms of perinatal mood & anxiety disorders, and postpartum psychosis 2. Give examples of perinatal mental health assessment tools 3. Discuss specific treatment interventions and approaches when working with the perinatal population 4. Describe other factors impacting treatment of people with perinatal mental health experiences About the Instructor: Kristina D'Antonio serves as Manager of Clinical Services in the Women’s Mental Health Division within OBGYN at Columbia University Medical Center. In this role, she provides direct care to individuals and groups, drawing on psychodynamic, relational, and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Her clinical expertise includes the treatment of postpartum depression, the impact of early trauma during the perinatal period, and women’s sexual health concerns. In addition to her clinical work, Kristina provides supervision to MSW and psychiatric nurse practitioner students and serves as a generalist year advisor at the Columbia University School of Social Work. Beyond her work with the perinatal population, she also treats individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, as well as patients with memory disorders. Kristina earned her MSW from NYU’s Silver School of Social Work and completed postgraduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Institute.
