Course Description

The human-animal bond is a significant relationship. Pet loss or hardship causes many strong emotions that can lead to isolation from other's who don’t understand the bond’s importance. The bond with pets has never been stronger…pets are not just animals, they are family. When a pet dies, the grief can mirror, or even surpass, the sorrow of human loss. Understanding this unique grief is essential to provide therapeutic support. This interdisciplinary course, co-created by a veterinarian and a licensed social worker, provides deep insights into the emotional and psychological dynamics of pet loss & its impact on an individual's overall well-being. You’ll Learn: 1. The importance of the human-animal bond 2. Ways to relate to-and empathize with-a client's difficult emotions over a pet 3. Which clients may be more bonded with their pets Level: Introduction Course Objectives 1. Articulate historical, cultural, & psychological factors that contribute to the profound relationship between humans & their pets, understanding why the loss is so impactful 2. Identify unique emotional & psychological responses to pet grief; provide tailored therapeutic interventions 3. Recognize & address the stages of pet grief Importance to Dr. Iovino: “This topic is part of why I became a veterinarian. The human-animal bond is so important and positives, yet something people rarely talk about is the pain of losing a pet. I see so many clients struggle when that bond is broken. I hope to assist mental health workers who may come across people struggling with this issue and give them resources to help.” Instructor Bio: Dr. Katherine Iovino is a small animal veterinarian with an interest in animal behavior, positive reinforcement training, and the Human-Animal Bond. Dr. Iovino is also an adjunct professor at Suffolk County Community College helping shape future Veterinary Technicians. Although Dr. Iovino sees a multitude of medical issues, she has a passion for behavioral disorders in animals and focuses on making vet visits low-stress. Dr. Iovino is an Elite Fear Free Certified® Professional (the highest certification for veterinarians dedicated to preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety, & stress for patients during vet visits). She takes pride in communicating clearly with all of her clients (human) and patients (pets) alike. Dr. Iovino received her B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Marist College and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania.
