Course Description

Respect Starts Here: Strategies for Engaging Young Adults in Abuse Prevention Conversations Led by the Associate Director of Prevention Education of The Retreat, the East End of Long Island’s primary domestic and sexual violence preventiona agency, this workshop will focus on key topics in youth programming to promote healthy relationships for teens. We’ll discuss digital challenges, boundary-setting, and conversation starters for parents and youth-serving adults. The session will highlight insights from high school students in The Retreat’s Teen Leadership Council, a community service program on Long Island’s East End. Participants will learn instructional strategies and activities for use with youth, including online workshop topics and digital tools, as well as ways to support teens with appropriate language and resources. Course Objectives Recognize key challenges in teen dating relationships including digital abuse and boundary-setting issues Use strategies to engage teens in conversations about abuse prevention Identify resources for support in teen dating relationships About the Instructor Courtney Hyland is the Associate Director of Prevention Education at The Retreat. She holds graduate degrees in Curriculum and Instruction, as well as Instructional Technology and Design with a specialization in distance learning. Courtney works with community partners, health care workers, and youth-serving adults to understand the dynamics of abuse and respond supportively to keep survivors safe and prevent future abuse. Courtney creates digital content to engage youth across the East End of Long Island, helping them recognize the warning signs of unhealthy relationships, build healthy relationships, and become leaders in their community. She leads The Retreat’s Teen Leadership Council, a community service program that empowers high school students to prevent abuse and promote respect in their schools and communities. Courtney's professional background also includes teaching elementary and special education, as well as experience in training and development.
