Course Description

Infertility & perinatal loss are prevalent experiences that are not often discussed. This results in deep grief for people experiencing the situation combined with feelings of isolation and betrayal of one’s own body. This course details how to work with patients who have experienced infertility and/or perinatal loss while providing a necessary overview of infertility, common infertility treatments, & mental health considerations that often arise in discussions with patients. Learners are encouraged to share case material and engage in conversation around relevant therapeutic work. YOU WILL LEARN: 1. How to work with patients who experienced reproductive trauma, pregnancy loss, or infertility 2. Mental health impacts of perinatal loss & the unique grief reactions of individuals and couples 3. Psychotherapeutic treatment approaches to employ when treating this population Course Objectives: 1. Recognize reproductive trauma & the different types of perinatal loss 2. Consider specific treatment approaches when working with patients experiencing reproductive trauma 3. Recognize the unique grief experiences of patients struggling with fertility challenges and/or perinatal losses Learning Level: Introduction/Intermediate Importance to Ms. D’Antonio: “I have both personal and professional experience with infertility and pregnancy loss. Regardless of clinician specialization, given how common these presenting issues are, therapists will likely come across them in their work. I'd love to help them expand their knowledge base and clinical considerations when working with those facing reproductive trauma.” About the Instructor: Kristina D’Antonio serves as Manager of Clinical Services in the Women’s Mental Health Division within OBGYN at Columbia University Medical Center. In this role, she provides direct care to individuals and groups, drawing on psychodynamic, relational, and cognitive-behavioral approaches. Her clinical expertise includes the treatment of postpartum depression, the impact of early trauma during the perinatal period, and women’s sexual health concerns. In addition to her clinical work, Ms. D’Antonio provides supervision to MSW and psychiatric nurse practitioner students and serves as a generalist year advisor at the Columbia University School of Social Work. Kristina received her MSW from NYU Silver School of Social Work and completed postgraduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the William Alanson White Institute.
