Class Description

Supporting Emotional Resilience: Helping Clients who Witness Traumatic Events Persons who work in a broad range of emergency services are exposed to traumatic events that put them at risk of post-traumatic sequelae. This course identifies positive and pathological client, clinician, and corporate responses to trauma and presents therapeutic methodologies including mindfulness and self-care. Time is included for discussion and for practicing technique. Course Objectives After completing this course, participants will identify signs of unhealthy coping following traumatic events and the aggravating factors that exacerbate them After completing this course, participants will recognize factors leading to reluctance to seek help After completing this course, participants will distinguish positive and negative aspects of morbid humor by first responders After completing this course, participants will formulate treatment plans based on self-care and mindfulness, and will evaluate their own experience of this during a group exercise About the Instructor Robert O. Chase is a dual citizen of the United States of America and the Dominican Republic. He holds Master's degrees in Social Work and in Education. He worked for the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addictions Services for thirty years as a forensic-psychiatric social worker in an expert judicial witness role. Concurrent to that career, he worked part-time in a hospital emergency department for sixteen years and taught 540 college credits in psychology and Spanish as a second language. Bob and his wife Clarisa authored five editions of the college textbook "An Introduction to Medical Spanish," published by Yale University Press. Following his retirement, Bob has been deployed as a clinician first responder to national crises including the global pandemic, the care of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum, the Maui wildfire response, and two hurricanes. He is a life-long trumpet musician.
