Course Description

Supporting Family Caregivers Navigating Mental Health and Wellness: Clinical Implications for Professionals Over 53 million family caregivers nationwide are estimated to provide care to a loved one (National Alliance for Caregiving, 2020). The number of family caregivers in the United States is projected to increase substantially in the next decade. Caregiving is multi-faceted and takes many forms--with family caregivers caring for young children, an aging spouse or parent, a loved one with a lifelong disability, or those navigating unique multiple caregiving roles for 2 or more care recipients. The roles and responsibilities associated with family caregiving are often coupled with many rewards and joys, but also can pose many challenges for caregivers in the United States and worldwide. Caregiving, for some, can be associated with caregiver burden, a reduction in quality of life, and adverse health and mental health outcomes. As such, professionals are critical in providing resources, services, and therapeutic support for family caregivers. Counselors, social workers, health providers, and other professionals often provide support to care recipients and their family caregivers. This training will provide an understanding of the intricacies of family caregiving, as well as clinical implications, resources, and supports for family caregivers who provide care for one or more loved ones. Supporting the mental health needs and strategies to support wellness will be a focus of this webinar. Course Objectives Explain various types of visible and invisible family caregivers Summarize the differences between formal and informal social support networks and their utility in supporting family caregivers List 3 therapeutic strategies to promote positive mental health outcomes and caregiver wellness About the Instructor Dr. Christina Marsack-Topolewski- LMSW is an associate professor of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services at Eastern Michigan University. She received a bachelor’s of science in Special Education, specializing in Cognitive Impairments, from Wayne State University. She trained under a specialized fellowship at the University of Michigan, receiving her master’s in Social Work and specializing in both school social work and aging from the University of Michigan. Dr. Marsack-Topolewski received her PhD in Social Work with a dual title in Gerontology from Wayne State University. She has worked with individuals with various intellectual
