7/18/2026 | Saturday, 10am - 12pm ET | 2 CE hours | $40

40 US dollars

Course Description

Concealing one's sexual orientation can have serious mental & physical health consequences. Because heterosexuality is often assumed, many individuals may not disclose their sexual orientation until they find a safe and affirming environment. It is essential to create such an environment to achieve positive clinical results. Coming out is a process that is forever ongoing. The first inkling that one's sexuality is not strictly heterosexual can be traumatic, confusing, & unnerving. This course will share best practices when someone of any age is sharing their sexual orientation with you. YOU WILL LEARN: 1. Best practices when someone shares their sexual orientation in a clinical setting 2. Helpful terminology & awareness of terms/questions that can actually be offensive 3. Ways to understand the plight of the person who is coming out 4. Methods to address the self-loathing that is sometimes felt by the client Course Objectives: 1. Identify the stages common in the process of coming out 2. Recognize the safety net that bisexuality holds and the plight of those who are indeed bisexual, and the lack of acceptance they experience 3. Predict the consequences of coming out to family members & friends, especially youth 4. Transform the impact of gay slurs & bullying on victims 4. Prepare a script that will best ensure the safety & confidence of the client Why This Is Important to Ms. Schneider: “As someone who has personally experienced the revelation of my sexual orientation, I feel the need to share with counselors and social workers the power they have to help those who struggle with acceptance from family, religion and society.” About the Instructor: Diane taught for 38-years in Rockland County, NY. She was the co-chair for GLSEN Hudson Valley and did many workshops for both students and teachers. Diane is an author and online professor for Teacher Education Institute and created the course “Reaching Out to Our Gay and Transgender Students.” She joined the LGBTQ cadre with the NEA in 2007. She currently resides in Florida. Diane holds an MS in Health Education and her NYS Teachers' license.
