Class Description

Using the Creative Process to Help People Heal This course will focus on using art materials and the creative process to help people explore emotions, build self-esteem, reduce anxiety and resolve psychological conflicts. By using creative techniques such as painting, drawing, sculpture and collage with your clients, they can express themselves to foster healing and mental well-being. When creating art, people are able to focus on their own perceptions and imagination to gain personal insight and develop new coping skills. No special talent or artistic ability is required, and the creative process is beneficial to people of all ages. Course Objectives: •Understand the goals of using art as therapy •Discuss evidence-based research showing the arts promote mental health •Examine how art has become an important part of the therapeutic field •Choose art directives to guide clients through multiple activities for self-expression •Explain the importance of reflection after making art •Plan applicable prompts for reflection to guide clients as they share their art After completing this workshop, participants will be able to •Apply the creative properties to clinical practice. •Learn one or two helpful art directives for teaching social skills •Identify the foundations of art therapy. Instructors: Danielle Cacioppo is an artist, educator, and lifelong learner. She graduated from Hofstra University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts before earning a Master of Education from Grand Canyon University. Working with both adolescents and adults, Danielle teaches about health and wellness in addition to utilizing the creative process to heal. She has studied the relationship between nutrition and mental health extensively as well as the connection between Art and social and emotional learning. Michael Chiappone has been a Social Worker for the past 17 years. His work has primarily focused on assisting people who are homeless, mentally ill, or living with Substance Use Disorder. He also sees clients who seek help for a variety of reasons. For most of his career, he worked at Hope House Ministries, a highly respected not-for-profit agency. He held two positions at Hope House, Director of Project Hope II, a program that worked specifically with the chronic homeless population. He also assisted in developing and implementing Hope Academy, a non-traditional, long-term treatment facility for substance abuse.
