Secondary and Work-Related Trauma Stress

Mon | March 7 | 4pm-6pm EST | 2 CEs | Jennie Lannette Bedsworth, LCSW

Class Description

This course will cover both secondary traumatic stress and the experience of direct trauma on the job. You’ll learn theory and skills to help yourself and others. Secondary traumatic stress is when you feel disturbed after being exposed to the story of someone else's trauma. It typically occurs in a professional setting such as therapy or case management. Acute stress and PTSD can also occur on the job, when healthcare and social service workers experience trauma directly. This might involve situations such as the traumatic death of a client, or being assaulted in a residential setting. We will identify and discuss trauma-related symptoms, and how they can be treated. You may not be able to eliminate exposure to trauma at work, however, there are ways to recognize and address related complications. We will practice ways to support yourself, your colleagues, and your clients. Course Objectives After attending this course, participants will be able to... Define secondary traumatic stress Differentiate secondary traumatic stress and direct trauma exposure Identify signs of ongoing complications from secondary and primary trauma on the job Identify and enhance protective factors against developing trauma complications Describe specific techniques used to treat trauma complications Refer to a preventive self-care plan developed during the workshop About the Presenter: Jennie Lannette, MSW, LCSW, is a therapist in private practice in mid-Missouri. In the past, she’s worked at inpatient state hospital settings, community mental health clinics, and as an EAP provider. She’s trained extensively in CBT therapies for PTSD, for both children and adults. She also holds a journalism degree and runs her own site with therapy resources called The Counseling Palette. She recently published the book Finding Peace from PTSD.
