Class Description

The Therapeutic Healing Power of Words & Giving Grief a Voice The workshop will explore the benefits of finding a "voice" through the process of writing. Participants will be guided through specific techniques that unlock grief emotions using both words and the physical healing practice of writing. Grief case studies, practical prompts, and grief writing exercises will be incorporated to identify & process the client's emotions, beliefs, and the full range of normal grief reactions. The workshop's focus is on the art and emotional power of writing as a therapeutic intervention for clients to give grief a voice. Objectives: Participants will be able to - Identify the various forms of loss, types of grief experiences and understand their emotional components to help increase self-awareness through writing. Describe the elements of grief that give voice to unspoken emotions. Describe four benefits about the concept of "Write Your Script," which prepares clients to manage difficult moments better, avert uncomfortable interactions and regulate emotions on their journey of grief. Instructors: Gae Savino, LCSW, CT is a licensed clinical social worker and a grief counselor Certified in Thanatology (CT), the study of death, dying and bereavement by the Association for Death Education and Counseling. Gae earned her Master's Degree in Social Work from Fordham University and has post-graduate training in complicated grief treatment at The Center for Complicated Grief at Columbia. Gae also has an intensive focus on conducting bereavement support groups for individuals due to loss of a loved one. In addition, Gae co-facilitates the online WMCHeath Post-COVID-19 Recovery Program Support Group for Westchester Medical Center's Advanced Physician Services. Gae is a frequent workshop presenter on issues of loss, death, dying and bereavement, complicated grief, and the multifaceted grief/bereavement impact of COVID-19. spousal/partner, and parent loss. Linnie Pickering, LMSW received her BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania and her master's degree in social work from Columbia University. She is a specialist in the prevention of domestic violence, child abuse, suicide, and sexual assault. She did post-graduate training at Columbia University's Center for Complicated Grief, and her focus is now on issues related to loss, grief, death, dying and bereavement, complicated grief, and the multifaceted grief/bereavement impact of COVID-19.
